Adelaide’s Australia Day 2026: A Day of Reflection, Unity, and Celebration

South Australia’s Australia Day program returns with a balanced lineup of events designed to unite the community. Held at Elder Park / Tarntanya Wama, the official state program presented by the Australia Day Council of South Australia offers space for quiet reflection, cultural appreciation, and festive evening celebrations.


Morning Reflection: Mourning in the Morning

  • Time: 7:30 AM
  • Location: Banks of the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri

The day begins with a First Nations-led gathering focused on truth-telling, listening, and shared understanding under the theme “Our Continuing Journey.”

  • Opening Ceremony: Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony conducted by Kaurna Elder Uncle Moogy Sumner.
  • Keynote Speaker: Anthony McEvoy SC, a leading barrister specializing in native title, land rights, and environmental law.
  • Performances: Live contemporary music and dance by local South Australian First Nations artists.

All members of the public—both First Nations and non-Indigenous—are warmly invited to participate in this respectful morning gathering.


Evening Festivities: Aus Lights on the River

  • Time: From 7:00 PM
  • Location: Elder Park / Tarntanya Wama

As night falls, Elder Park transforms into a colorful, family-friendly hub featuring illuminated art installations, giant bird displays, shadow-puppet storytelling, roving performers, and interactive creative workshops.

The Community Parade

A central highlight of the evening is the vibrant one-hour multicultural parade showcasing South Australia’s diverse community groups. Highlights include:

  • High-energy beats from the Adelaide Pipe Band and precision piping from the Scottish Association.
  • Energetic performances by the Adelaide Rock & Roll Club and Calisthenics SA.
  • Rhythmic drumming and dancing by Suns of Africa.
  • Spectacular cultural routines from Chinatown Adelaide Dragon Dance Team, as well as folkloric dance groups representing Peru, Sri Lanka, and Latin America.

Guests can also enjoy a wide variety of multicultural food stalls situated along the riverbank.


Night Program & Grand Finale

  • 8:30 PM: The official ceremony kicks off with a traditional flag-raising and national anthem, followed by a headline performance by powerhouse vocalist Diana Rouvas. Additional musical performances feature the Festival Statesmen Choir, Young Adelaide Voices, and musicians from the Adelaide Youth Orchestra.
  • 9:30 PM: A major fireworks display lights up the sky over the river.
  • 11:00 PM: Festivities conclude following light installations and live DJ sets across the riverbank precinct.
