Coming this year to NSW Art Gallery is Takashi Murakami one of the most influential and recognisable contemporary artists of our time. Sydney’s art scene will welcome one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary artists in late 2026. Japanese artist Takashi Murakami will present Sydney exclusive retrospective dedicated to Murakami’s extraordinary career.
Opening on 5th December 2026, the exhibition will explore more than three decades of artistic innovation. Visitors will experience paintings, sculptures, videos and large scale installations spanning Murakami’s influential career. New works created specifically for the exhibition will make their global debut in Sydney.
Murakami is intentionally renowned for creating the ‘Superflat’ movement blending traditional Japanese art with contemporary pop culture. His vibrant flowers, imaginative characters, and bold visual style have captivated audiences worldwide. The exhibition reveals how his work transformed contemporary visual culture.
The exhibition will occupy multiple spaces within the Art Gallery’s Naala Badu building. Visitors will journey through immersive environments showcasing the evolution of Murakami’s artistic vision. The presentation promises a unique and engaging experience for art lovers of all ages.
Beyond the gallery world , Murakami’s influence extends into fashion, music and popular culture. HIs collaborations with luxury brands and global artists have made him one of Japan’s most recognisable creative figure.
