National Reconciliation Week

This Years National Reconciliation Week was held on May27 till the 3rd of June. Every year, Australians come together to observe National Reconciliation Week, a time to reflect on our shared history and strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community.

Across Sydney, National Reconciliation Week 2026 provides an opportunity for individuals, families, organisations, and communities to learn, listen, and engage in meaningful conversations about reconciliation.

Learning Through Culture and Community

These cultural events, educational programs, community gatherings, and storytelling, people from all backgrounds are encouraged to deepen their understanding of Australia’s First Nations cultures and histories.

Throughout the week, schools, workplaces, councils, and community organisations host activities that promote cultural awareness and encourage meaningful engagement. These events provide opportunities to hear Indigenous voices, celebrate cultural traditions, and recognise the deep connection Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have maintained with Country for tens of thousands of years.

Bayside Council’s Reconciliation Week Event

Bayside NSW Council held a Traditional Smoking Ceremony, Flag Raising and had guest speaker to speak on behalf of First Nation for the communities to understand the importance of the National Reconciliation Week. This events are held annually to honor Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and foster community understanding.

Community Reflection and Truth – Telling

The community came together to reflect, learn and connect at this year’s National Reconciliation Week event held at Rockdale Town Hall. Residents joined us for a meaningful morning featuring a flag raising and smoking ceremony, as well as a powerful conversation led by @auntybrendamatthews, a proud Wiradjuri woman. Aunty Brenda shared her story of truth telling, healing and reconnection, offering valuable insights that resonated with all in attendance. Panel Discussion and Community Engagement

The event concluded with a thoughtful panel discussion and Q&A, providing an opportunity for the community to listen, ask questions and deepen their understanding of reconciliation.

Looking Forward

As we observe National Reconciliation Week, we acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands across Sydney and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. Together, we can continue building a more inclusive, respectful, and connected Australia for future generations.
